Venäläistutkijat ovat kehittäneet magnetosähköisen RAM-muistin, jonka energiankulutus on jopa 10 tuhatta kertaa nykyisiä RAM-muisteja pienempi. Tutkijat antoivat muistilleen nimen MELRAM.

Moskovan fysiikan ja teknologian MIST-tutkimuskeskuksen tutkija Sergei Nikitov sanoo, että RAM-muistin ja sen käytetyimmän version eli DRAMin ongelma on aina ollut huono energiatehokkuus. MELRAMin periaate esiteltiin Applied Physics Letters -aikakauslehdessä.

MELRAM-muistin solu koostuu kahdesta komponentista. Toinen on pietsosähköinen elementti, joka tuottaa jännitteen mekaanisessa rasituksessa. Toinen komponentti on suuren magnetoelastisuuden omaava kerrosrakenne.

Tämä rakenne on anisotrooppinen eli se voidaan magnetoida kahdessa suunnassa. Nämä kaksi suuntaa vastaavat binäärilogiikan ykköstä ja nollaa. MELRAM-solu kykenee säilyttämään tämän loogisen tilansa, vaikka rakenteeseen ei kohdisteta jännitettä.

Nikitovin kohdalla tutkimusryhmä rakensi halkaisijaltaan millimetrin kokoisen laitteen, joka toimi. Tutkijoiden mukaan toteutettu rakenne voisi olla nanokokoisen muistisolun perusta aivan tavanomaisten RAM-solujen tapaan.

Koko innovaation keskiössä on uudenlainen datanlukumekanismi, joka korvaa magnettisissa muisteissa aiemmin käytetyn anturin käytön. Kehitetty ratkaisu on merkittävästi aiempaa yksinkertaisempi. Kun soluun kohdistetaan jännite, pietsosähköisen kerroksen rakenne muuttuu. Tämän rasituksen tuloksena magneettisuus muuttuu eli voidaan tallentaa bitti. Muistisolun tilaa voidaan tarkastella jännitteen perusteella.

MELRAM-solua voidaan skaalata pienempään ilman, että sen tehokkuus kärsii millä tavoin. Tämän ansiosta tekniikka mahdollistaa erittäin vähävirtaiset muistiratkaisut tietotekniikkaan.
