Mobiiliverkkojen radio-osissa ollaan menossa kovaa vauhtia kohti avoimia järjestelmiä. Intel ja Analog Devices työstävät yhteistä O-RAN-alustaa, johon integroidaan ADI:n 5Glähetinvastaanotin sekä Intelin ohjelmoitava Arria 10 -sarjan FPGA-piiri.

O-RAN-tekniikassa olennaista on se, että eri valmistajien komponentteja voidaan yhdistää osaksi samaa radioverkkoa. ADI ja Intel haluavat omalla radioalustallaan helpottaa 5G-verkon suunnittelun haasteisiin vastaamista.

- Tämä uusi radioalusta vähentää suunnittelun kokonaiskustannuksia ja nopeuttaa asiakkaidemme tuotteiden pääsyä markkinoille uhraamatta järjestelmätason suorituskykyä, sanoi ADI:n langattomien piirien ryhmän johtaja Joe Barry.

Suorituskykyisessä, O-RAN-yhteensopivassa ratkaisussa käytetään ADI:n markkinoiden johtavaa ohjelmistoa, joka sisältää innovatiivisen digitaalisen etupään. Intelin FPGA-piirin ansiosta suunnittelijat voivat mukauttaa radio-osan taajuutta, kaistaa ja tehoa saavuttaaksesi järjestelmän paremman suorituskyvyn alhaisemmilla kustannuksilla.

FPGA-piirejä on käytössä mobiiliverkkojen kehityksessä aina, mutta pääsääntöisesti prototyyppien kehitykseen. Esimerkiksi Nokia joutui tyytymään FPGA-pohjaiseen ratkaisuun, kun sen ReefShark-piirien kehitys ei sujunut odotetusti. Kaikkein kustannustehokkaimmin suurta laskentaa vaativa tukiasemapiiri toteutetaan kuitenkin ASIC-tyylisesti ReefShark-piirien tapaan.
